Shravan- The Month of Fasting

Sawan or Shravana is the fifth month of the hindu solar calendar. This month is devoted to worshipping of lord Shiva through special prayers and fasting every Monday. The story is that following the samudra manthan, several valuable gemstones emerged out of the sea. What also emerged was the poison, which Shiva swallowed. To protect her husband, Parvati, his consort held his neck to prevent the poison from entering into his body. This made Shiva’s throat turn blue (with the poison) and earned him the moniker, Neelkanth (the one with the blue throat).

Fasting helps the body to cope up with seasonal changes around the shravan month and also boosts immunity. You can do intermittent fasting for a healthier pattern of fasting. Begin with shorter hours and gradually increase the hours. Fasting reduces inflammation, stimulates better cellular processing and promotes cellular detoxification. Just like your physical detox is important your mental detox is also important in the month of Shravan. Meditation, yoga, shiva tandav stotram and chanting ‘Om namah Shivaay’ will bring peace.
